vote now to reduce poverty through architecture…

Harvard GSD students work to redesign hospitals in Rwanda to reduce poverty through architecture. Vote for MASS here. Check out MASS Group official website here.

MASS is an architectural design firm working in resource-limited settings to build social value through design. We work in these contexts to incubate locally-grown design communities, and to train architects to be culturally sensitive and committed to applying their skills to improve the quality of life of underserved populations. MASS asks architects the hard questions: if design is a service, who does it serve? If offered only to a few, what is the value of good design? We believe good design is the synthesis of complex problems into solutions that support well-balanced communities.

In 2007 there were fewer than 10 architects in the entire country of Rwanda, as many had fled or been killed during the genocide, and the status of most buildings were, as a result, poorly designed and creating health hazards for their inhabitants. We address this two-fold problem holistically, creating training programs to cultivate a next generation of Rwandan design leaders, while providing solutions to real projects in the training process. Our design of medical facilities in Rwanda with Partners in Health will not only serve the patients of the facilities and their families, but will benefit a global community by seeking solutions to diverse problems – from the airborne transmission of Tuberculosis to job creation and economic development in a community. Between the local and global scales, we recognize that a sustainable commitment to social change is made not only through the holistic design of buildings, but also through the design process’s capacity to generate reverberant impacts. three simple keys to good design…

#1 - order.

line things up. whether it’s a simple to-do list or living room furniture, things read much better when order and simplicity are involved. placement should reflect thoughtfulness; randomness is the lack of mental perseverance, and appears sloppy. never under-mind the viewer, they are hip to order whether they realize it or not. even incomplete ideas can be presented effectively through mindful presentation.

#2 - refinement.

if it’s not necessary, then omit. this goes for life too! but in this case, get rid of clutter when composing a website or designing clothing, so that you’re left working with things that support your vision rather than distract from it. this will allow you to highlight your strengths, and clean out superfluous details. it takes time to refine, but you’ll find it’s refreshing too!

#3 - consistency.

colors must work together. love your whites, but love your colors too! strive for visual harmony by choosing colors that complement each other. if you’re working with a lot of colors then make sure, for instance, that the color blue matches in each case. people look for color to make distinctions, and when consistency is sacrificed then the viewer can’t make a distinction, thus the message is lost.

- via nytimes: you may think dubai is an odd place — an ostentatious and architecturally spectacular member of the united arab emirates that has teetered on the brink of a real estate collapse. so perhaps a change in perspective is in order — from outer space. here’s the dubai coast, seen from the international space station. at left are the man-made palm jumeirah islands. at right is a development of 300 private man-made islands shaped like a global map. (angelina jolie and brad pitt were said, at one point, to be thinking about buying a faux ethiopia.) like dubai, the project may not be thriving. nasa could see little infrastructure.
