the green movement - a recognition of basic design principles…

I find it interesting that looking at the climatic conditions, sun path, solar orientation and environmental conditions are considered “critical elements for green design.” (Ecotect Video) 

Actually, they are fundamental components of design. I feel that the “green movement” is just drawing attention to things that good architects have been doing for years. And, now it has turned into a system for architects to earn points for being aware of some basic characteristics of a site.

It’s almost as if getting points and awards for green design is the impetus behind understanding a site, rather than the understanding of the site being the impetus behind thoughtful design.

Zoom - via nytimes: you may think dubai is an odd place — an ostentatious and architecturally spectacular member of the united arab emirates that has teetered on the brink of a real estate collapse. so perhaps a change in perspective is in order — from outer space. here’s the dubai coast, seen from the international space station. at left are the man-made palm jumeirah islands. at right is a development of 300 private man-made islands shaped like a global map. (angelina jolie and brad pitt were said, at one point, to be thinking about buying a faux ethiopia.) like dubai, the project may not be thriving. nasa could see little infrastructure.

malcolm wells was an environmentally conscious man who believed that no man-made structure should disrupt the existing footprint. holding true to his belief, he created eco-friendly homes and buildings with green roofs. he took the site’s existing footprint, and relocated it to the top of the structure - unique but very pragmatic approach.

“Big emitters of carbon dioxide are faced with a big problem. Industries and utilities will soon have to capture that CO2 and store it … somewhere. That where Carbon Sciences comes in. The California-based company has come up with a way that takes the captured greenhouse gas and turns it into gasoline and diesel … the exact same fuels that we put into our tanks today.”

- it seems like this viable resource could do wonders for existing CO2, but its success relies on storing immediate CO2 emissions, rather than the existing.  thus, doesn’t this actually foster an incentive to produce CO2 so that this idea/company can stay afloat. in addition, its counter productive to turn CO2 into usable gasoline and diesel since those things actually further harm our eco system. it would be more beneficial to turn this CO2 into usable energy that is environmentally friendly.
