great weekend of running by homes of architectural significance

The Newport Half Marathon was the best road race course that I have ever run. It guided us along beautiful beaches, cliffs, rolling hills and docks, as well as through the residential neighborhoods of Newport. It was great to be running along a grassy meadow on Ocean Avenue, and be able to see beyond a beach to the end of Bellevue Avenue to the famous Newport mansions. The architecture tied in well with the modern tradition that Dean Stern’s is describing in his Parallel Moderns course I’m taking. And, it’s true… Richard Morris Hunt didn’t mess around!

it’s friday… so it’s time to recharge!

enjoy this video about the evolution of humans as runners, excuse makers, and go for a long run… barefoot.

it’s not all architecture in architecture school… two days ago i was in workout debt, and when i was finally able to sneak off to the gym, it was closed. full of exercise envy, i happened upon a 20K registration booth. so i impulsively signed up. do i run? yes, sort of. was i free on monday? yes, sort of. is 20K doable? yes, sort of.

anyway, so i did it this morning, and it was awful and amazing at the same time. i finished the 12.4 miles in ~1:48. but what was really great about the race was that the course guided you through all the multifarious neighborhoods around new haven - each with their own live band! there were also a lot of classic rock covers, allman brothers, led zeppelin and lynyrd skynyrdmy favorite was the jimi hendrix guitar riff around the 7th mile in between the water and the expressway.

the picture above is fellow archi-dork, jack. he owned the race with his 7 minute miles which is really annoying.
